2004 Seated Dime Variety Discoveries

1841-O dime with reverse retained cud purchased at ANA Pittsburgh show

Luckily, I was able to purchase a partial set of circulated seated dimes at the ANA show. The seller was an LSCC member who prided himself in collecting choice VF-AU dimes with significant die cracks. He was a student of the Greer book and paid close attention to originality. The partial set contains many wonderful dimes, some will continue to be added to the web-book at time allow. I was really thrilled to find this 1841-O dime in the collection, not having seen or owned a retained cud on this date. The dime is now listed as Variety 107b and estimated at R6.

Doug Winter and Scott Schechter (Pinnacle Rarities) Discover 1876 Dime with Long Die Scratched Obverse Die

Doug Winter and Scott Schechter have discovered an 1876 Type I reverse seated dime with a bold die scratch on the obverse die. The horizontal die scratch is located in the lower gown area, slightly above and to the right of the pendant. The reverse on this coin is also strongly doubled. Both the obverse and reverse dies are clashed. The discovery coin grades MS66 and is in a PCGS holder. This variety is now listed as 1876 T1 F116 and estimated to be R3 until further study.

1842 dime with unlisted die pairing purchased at ANA Pittsburgh show

At the ANA Pittsburgh show, I purchased an 1842 dime in an ANACS50 holder. I knew the coin had been struck with Reverse C since the characteristic die lines from rim to AM(ERICA) were very evident on this AU piece. Reverce C has only been seen to date paired with Obverse 3, the obverse with the major rim cud at 10:00. Thinking this coin might be an early die state example of F103a without the rim cud and my long search for an example of F103 was over, I took the coin home for study. Instead this 1842 seated dime was produced from a die pairing of Obverse 4 (weak date and spaced 84 digits) with Reverse C. The Obverse 4/Reverse C die pairing has been designated as F104 and subsequent 1842 die pairings have been renumbered to account for the insertion of the additional listing of this die pairing.

1875-S Small S Below Wreath dime with rotated reverse die discovered by Dr. Michael Fey

After subscribing to the Liberty Seated Dime Varieties web-book, Dr. Michael Fey re-examined his seated dime collection to determine the possibility of finding an unlisted variety. As it turned out, Michael found an 1875-S Below Wreath dime with a rotated reverse die. The rotation is significant, measuring 50 degrees to the left. This is the first example of an 1875-S Below Wreath Small S dime to surface with a rotated reverse.

1890-S Medium S dime with new die pairing discovered by Paul Bradley

After subscribing to the Liberty Seated Dime Varieties web-book, Paul Bradley re-examined his extensive seated dime collection for new date placement or die pairing varieties that were not listed within the web-book. One of those submissions, for my review, was a very nice mint state 1890-S dime graded MS64 by ICG. Paul could not determine the obverse die from the web-book listings but identified the reverse die as being Reverse H. Paul's assessments were very accurate and the result is the identification of a new obverse die for 1890 San Francisco coinage paired with Reverse H. The new obverse die has been listed as Obverse 12 and the new die pair is list as Variety 117. Nice work Paul!
