Scarcity: A difficult date to locate in any grade and rare in EF or better. In Mint State, this date is very
underrated as few examples are known.
Updated Greer Rarity Ratings
Overall Rarity: G-VG R3-, F-VF R3+, EF-AU R5-, MS R7
Comments: First year of Hughes obverse design and new Open Bud reverse hub. This date usually comes softly
struck at the head and bow knot with fully struck examples being highly prized. Only one die pair is known
at this time. However the reported mintage of 377,500 pieces could suggest a second set of dies as Variety 101
is not seen with heavy die wear or die cracks. Given this date's scarcity, one would question whether the
mintage may be overstated and/or may account for some 1840 No Drapery coinage.
