Comments: The uniqueness of Variety 108 was first identified by Dick Osburn. He noted that the date placement on Obverse 5 did not match any of the documented 1842-O obverse dies and listed the coin as such on his website. I secured the dime from Dick, confirmed the undocumented die pair and purchased the coin for inclusion in the web-book.
Obverse 5 is worn on the plate coin. There are minor die blemishes visible under my stereoscope, but nothing worth photographing. The date position is the primary diagnostic for Obverse 5.
Reverse G has a Medium O mintmark that is positioned similar to Reverse E. The difference between Reverse G and E is locations of die cracks. The later die state die cracks found on Reverse G do not match those on Reverse E. The reverse die is also slightly rotated left.
Even though the 1842-O date has been well research by New Orleans specialists and seated dime variety collectors, a new die pairing has appear. F-108 will be initially listed as R6 until more is known about the new variety.
