Scarcity: A historically scarce date, but recent rarity is a result of excessive hoarding. 1844 dimes are scarce in grades of EF or better with few Mint State examples known. This date, nicknamed the "Little Orphan Annie" dime, has been a favorite target of hoarders over the years. For years, this date was overpriced due to the promotional efforts of Frank C. Ross. An excellent Numismatisit article on the Little Orphan Annie Dime, written by Leonard Augsburger, can be found at http://www.money.org/publications/orphan_annie1.pdf. Recently, hoarding has once again escalated the 1844 date's premium versus its true scarcity. During 2003, Heritage Rare Coins auctioned a 612 example hoard of 1844 dimes. Comments: Current pricing, in grades G through EF, is slightly beyond that of the 1846 date which is more difficult in all grades. A date that comes well struck with nice surfaces, when it can be located. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
