Scarcity: 1856-S dimes are very challenging to locate in general and become rare above VF. Extremely rare in Mint State. At current pricing levels, this date remains potentially underrated for nice problem free and original examples. Comments: Very early die state examples will exhibit repunching in the upper loop of the mintmark. Only one die pair is known for this date. This die pair degrades and exhibits die cracks on both the obverse and reverse. Greer mentioned a report of a variety with a repunched date. Examination of the digits in the date under a stereo microscope revealed an extra blob of metal within the 5 digit. This metal is located between the upper flag and top section of the loop within the 5 digit. Both early and late die state specimens exhibit this anomaly. I would not consider this anomaly to be repunching. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
