Scarcity: A fairly common date in the With Stars series, however it becomes very scarce in EF or better. The Medium and Large O mintmarks are equally available with a slight edge to the Medium O in difficulty. This date is also readily available in Mint State. Comments: Three reverse dies appear to have been used for the 1859-O mintage based on the research to date. Two of the reverse dies have Large O mintmarks while the remaining reverse die has a Medium O mintmark. This could explain the slightly higher difficulty in finding Medium O specimens. Greer mentions a Large O reverse with a very weak mintmark, "probably from a filled die". I have not seen this variety, so it goes unlisted for the time being.
