Scarcity: Business strikes are rare in all circulated grades. Mint State examples are considered to be very scarce and can be located with patience. Proof examples are the easiest to find. Comments: Variety 101 is the rarest of the three varieties and was discovered by Andrew Mesaros during 1977. Mr. Mesaros had examined his personal hoard of ten proof 1867 dimes to ensure that no prooflike business strikes were present and identified the lower date position on one of his dimes. Kam Ahwash confirmed that dime as a new variety and listed it as Ahwash 1 in his encyclopedia. I have chosen to maintain the Variety 101 listing as a business strike though examples come prooflike.
