Double Die Reverse, Proof Like Fields, Rich Aquamarine-Gold Toning, Hammered Strike. Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. Wow! This lovely 1888-S dime was purchased way back in April 1992 from the Stack's William Moore Salle -Lot 705. Freshly graded and housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 holder without CAC attempt. This offering is special due to proof like fields on both sides. Strike is hammered with all devices boldly defined. An intermixed aquamarine-gold patina covers both sides with the aquamarine being dominant. Then there is the double die reverse die variety that adds more charm. The F-103 reverse is a doubled die with the doubling being significant above the letters (ONE). Traces of die doubling can be found on the outer wreath elements on the left side of the die. Kam Ahwash commented in his Encyclopedia that "The entire reverse is doubled strongly". This statement should be re-examined as the doubling is primarily seen above the letters of the denomination. The Ahwash plate coin is also in my collection and its die state matches this plate coin exactly. Utilized as the 1888-S F-103 plate coin at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors. December 1969
