Low Mintage Civil War Date, Frosty Luster, Near-Choice Original Surfaces, Light Greenish-Gray Patina, Seal Beach Collection. Let's stop and consider the significance of this 1864 Seated half dollar offering. 1864 brought the appointment of Ulysses S. Grant as commander of all Union armies on March 3. Sherman is marching through the deep south and is in Georgia by May. During that turbulent year, 379,100 half dollars were struck at the Philadelphia mint. Higher grade circulated survivors are quite scare with few available for present day collectors. The Seal Beach Collection consignor comes to the rescue with a strong AU58 example to consider. The survivor features frosty luster from strictly original surfaces. Strike is 100% complete with bold devices on both sides. Coloring is a faint gray with some embedded greenish hues that are amplified by GFRC photography. Doubling is seen on the star points in the left obverse field. Accurately graded and housed in PCGS Gen 5.0 Dupont hologram holder. Please note that there is plastic holder haze between stars 10 and 11 which appears as lighter shades on the image. December 1969
