No Mintmark, Capped Bust Medium Letters Reverse, Original Golden-Gray Patina, Single Obverse Field Line. . An example of the popular 1840 New Orleans strike with a leftover Capped Bust reverse die that lacks a mintmark. The reverse was previously used to strike Reeded Edge design coinage during 1839 where the mintmark was placed on the obverse. Demand is always high for this issue since required for both a Liberty Seated half dollar date and mintmark set along with early coinage type sets. This solid example appeared at the 2020 Winter FUN show. Please don't get hung up on the NGC Details designation. The sole scratch on this half is the short line in the upper ring field that is ancient and not distracting. I don't make a habit of adding Details certified coins to inventory via outright purchase. However, I liked this example immediately during inspection and believe it will fit nicely into budget conscious sets being assembled. The reverse is heavily cracked while the obverse die has significant die rust throughout the gown folds. Housed in NGC large font holder with edge view insert. The holder label reads Med Letters, EF Details, Obv Scratched December 1969
