This date is generally acknowledged, along with the 1864-S, as the most challenging San Francisco issue in the series. Although its mintage is higher than the 1864-S, its survival rate is considerably lower, with only 53 PCGS grading events in all grades combined, compared to 111 for the 1864-S quarter. This example is especially mark-free for the grade, with just a couple line hidden within Liberty’s torso, while the fields are smooth and virtually free of defects. Shade of gray inhabit the stars and reverse legend while the central figures present a dusty silver appearance. The overall eye appeal is strong, and the new owner will possess a pleasing example of a rare coin that is difficult to obtain with this level of quality. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.5 (2011-2013) holder.
