Large Date, PCGS Pop 3, Rare F-103 Die Pairing, Steely Luster, Crusty Golden-Silver Gray Patina, Newtown Collection. 1856 Philadelphia strike with a Large date punch are many times rarer in AU and Mint States than their Small date counterparts. Gerry Fortin's die variety research has identified twenty-one Small Date obverse dies as compared to only four Large Date dies per Ken Hill's Gobrecht Journal documentation during the 1980s. This PCGS MS63 graded example is only one of three grade at that level. A fully choice example and 100% original. A crusty golden silver-gray skin covers the obverse while the reverse exhibits enhanced gold shades surrounding the legend. When conducting die variety research during the 1992 - 2004 timeframe, the F-103 variety was the most elusive of the four die marriages. Having a MInt State example appearing on the market in a PCGS holder is a big deal! Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 holder. An important duplicate offering from the Newtown Collection. December 1969
