Original, Murphys Collection. The WB-10 variety is an easy die pair to attribute, with a comically low date punched beneath the rock. Traditional wisdom is that date and mintmark punching was left to the apprentices while the Chief Engraver focused on hub and die production, but this is not known with certainty. In any case, this is one of the visually interesting anomalies of Seated coinage die production. This example is even silver with hints of light gold on both sides, a shade heavier on the reverse. Liberty’s elbow and the H in in HALF exhibit medium crust. The obverse right field hosts a few horizonal lines while a few ticks are seen within the figure of Liberty. The strike is typical, with star 8 flat and some eagle feathers merging together. Like many San Francisco issues, mintage in this year is a fraction of the Philadelphia output. Housed in a newer NGC holder with edge view insert. December 1969
