First Year San Francisco Strike, Patinated AU53, Rare Grade, Oregon Beaver Collection. One of the keys to the Seated half series, the 1855-S always draws quick attention when examining a set of half dollars. Collectors of the period cared little for mintmarks, with the result that high-grade examples simply weren't set aside. Indeed, PCGS certifies only two MS examples, and only six AU pieces above this AU53 coin. The obverse of this reflective piece is framed by opposing evergreen bands, while the reverse is less intensely toned with highlights of maroon and teal. WB-4, with a die lump above the obverse shield, and weakness in the reverse shield verticals. Nicely struck with sharp feather detail, while a couple stars are soft. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder. Previously sold at Heritage, 7/2014, lot 3758, where it realized $8,225. December 1969
