The three-dollar gold piece is an odd-duck in the American series, but there is no denying the appeal of a well-preserved, low-mintage gold coin. Intense, fiery orange-gold shades contrast with the more brilliant rims and protected areas, and the eye appeal is visceral. A few ticks are consistent with the technical grade. CAC has awarded gold stickers to only two 1888 $3s, this piece, and another at the MS62 level. If looking for a single example to illustrate the three-dollar design in a type set, this is the coin.
