Choice Original, Hoosier AU58 Collection Sale. Examples of the 1860-S quarter at this grade level are few and far between. This condition rarity went unrecognized for a long time, but, with the advent of the PCGS and NGC census reports, the numbers could not be denied. Collector Jim Gray was ahead of the curve in this regard, and wrote an illuminating article on the 1860-S quarter in 1990 (Gobrecht Journal #49) that clearly explained the situation. This piece exhibits a palleted of mottled gray offset by gold hues in the recessed areas, with a few field marks noted on the obverse. Although not quite original enough for CAC certification, the quality is consistent with PCGS standards and the rarity is unquestionable. Strike is typical, as noted by Briggs, with soft stars and merging feathers on the reverse. PCGS grades only four coins higher. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder. December 1969
