Seated 10C 1867S Seated 10C 1867-S
Few Known, Gem Original, Crusty Gray Patina, Grease Filled Dies, Conservatively Graded, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. During Greer's Liberty Seated Dime die variety research (prior to 1992), he located a high grade example of the 1867-S F-102 die pair that exhibits a very weak date. He suggested that a filled die could have produced this variety. Closer examination of other obverse device elements on Greer discovery coin (this offering) revealed additional irregular or missing features. Close inspection of GFRC images will reveal that the horizontal shield lines have inconsistent width from the left to right sides of the shield. The letters in UNITED are weakly struck with missing serifs or feet. An obverse die with residual surface grease could be a credible explanation for the inconsistent features of Variety 102a. The Greer coin become part of the Fortin collection and is the F-102a plate coin at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors. This important specimen was sold into an LSCC member collection during 2018 and was purchased back during the 2020 FUN show. It now returns to the GFRC price list for a second appearance. A circulated gem that is housed in PCGS 6.0 holder with CAC approval. The PCGS label features the F-102a attribution.
