Underrated Carson City Date, Choice Original, Cumberland County Collection. The Carson City Seated half series ends with a final challenging issue. The Bugert reference estimates a surviving population of 250 pieces for the 1878-CC issue, many of which are low grade or damaged. Brilliant luster between steely and frosty covers both sides of the near-uncirculated example, revealing silver-colored centers with creamy maroon at the rims. The obverse exhibits light crust, which is heavier on the reverse. Nicely struck, with full-defined stars and most claw joints distinct. WB-1, the only die pair for this issue. This is an attractive, high-grade survivor from a low mintage issue that bears the most coveted mintmark in the Liberty Seated series. Carson City aficionados will be hard-pressed to make their selections from the Cumberland consignment, as the overall offering is exceptional and rarely all presented at once. Housed in a PCGS Gen 5.0 (2015) Dupont hologram holder. December 1969
