Reverse of 1838, Near-Gem, Eye Appeal, Cumberland County Collection. This is a popular variety, struck in New Orleans with an 1839 Bust half reverse die, and thus bearing no mintmark. The New Orleans connection was discovered by Bill Bugert, who wrote a related article in Gobrecht Journal #38 (March 1987), which may be viewed at https://archive.org/details/gobrechtjournalfn038libe/page/2/mode/2up. This is an attractive example, with intense aqua-blue rim toning and scattered russet shades filling the interiors. A couple field marks are evident, but the surfaces are original, which only serves to further highlight the pleasing toning. CAC has approved 28 pieces total and eight examples higher. This piece will attract considerable interest. Housed in an NGC Gen 5 (1992-1995) Fatty holder with CAC approval. December 1969
