F-108a
Gem $2150 Small S, Late F-108a Die State, Brilliant Frosty Luster, Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection . The 1890-S F-108 Small S obverse die can rarely be found in a later die state with crossing die cracks through the date digits. One die crack starts at the top oval of the 8 digits and proceeds left through top of 1 digit, into the base and the rock where it terminates. A second die crack starts at the rim below the base of 1 digit and proceeds right through the lower loop of 8 digit, the top loop of 9 digit and into the base. The F-108a die state was discovered during 2014. Up until that time, this die state had not been seen on the limited number of F-108 Small S examples reviewed; most were found in lower circulated grades. The F-108a die state is considered to be very rare and is rated as R7. Since 2014, no other examples have been reported. This offering is the important discovery piece and the 1890-S F-108a plate coin at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors aka the web-book. Gem surfaces exhibits large amounts of brilliant frosty luster and shimmering cartwheels. In hand inspection of this rare gem is recommended to appreciate the beauty not captured on GFRC images.
