Low Mintage Civil War Issue, Rose-Gold Coloring, Brilliant Luster, Osprey Collection. During 1863, the Civil War was raging with smaller denomination coinage disappearing from everyday commerce. The Philadelphia continued to strike a limited number of gold pieces, probably to satisfy local collector demand. Mintage is 5,000 struck leading to the date being scarce in all grades. This well preserved survivor brings atypical rose-gold obverse toning over lightly mirrored fields. Reverse coloring is closely to orange-gold with the fields being closer to frosted than mirrored. Both dies are heavily clashed when striking this piece. This near-choice example has a few scattered abrasions. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder with a considerable amount of plastic holder haze on the reverse that should be taken into consideration. PCGS price guide has recently increased to $6000 for the issue. December 1969
