Near-Gem, Newtown Collection. The Carson City Mint in the 1870s had a tendency to polish dies, and this is a typical example with partially mirrored fields and reflective luster. Most examples of this variety are similarly finished. A quick tilt of the obverse reveals the characteristic "black and white" look, while the reverse admits occasional shades of beige and russet. F-101, with die lumps in the upper left arm. Some chatter in the right obverse field is noted. PCGS has certified 14 examples in MS64, with 16 pieces finer. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.6 (2002-2004) holder. December 1969
