Choice Original,, Newtown Collection. This is one of the keys in the Seated half series, with a low mintage, 200,750 pieces, that was further subject to melting, as silver coins were overweight in the years just prior to the 1853 Coinage Act. This example is completely hammered, with needle-sharp detail from the hair strands to the reverse claws. All devices emerge boldly from the planchet, and the relief is strong. Even, light maroon patina evenly covers the obverse, while the reverse is silver and gray throughout, with deeper shades present in the recessed areas. Fields are steely, and the luster is reflective. WB-5, with repunching in 18 and a reverse die clash in the lower right portion of the shield. Housed in a PCGS Gen 3.1 (1993-1998) old green holder.
