Cracked Dies, Steely Luster, Very Scarce Die State, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. A scarce 1845 F-108 die state with bold obverse and reverse die cracks. A horizontal die crack connects the date digits. The die crack is most obvious at the midsections of the 45 digits. The reverse has significant die cracks in two locations. A heavy die crack starts at the rim and proceeds through UN(I)TED, through the wreath and into (D)IME. Another die crack is seen from the left ribbon bow to the rim. This offering is the F-108a plate coin within the Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. Purchased March 2001 as part of the die variety research project. Fields offer steely luster during angled lighting review. Strike is complete. Some obverse field ticks preclude a Choice quality rating. Another old friend that needs to find a new home.
