Key Philadelphia Date, Choice Original, Seated Appalachian Collection.. The Philadelphia Mint produced little silver coinage in the early 1850s, as speculators could instantly profit by flipping silver coins for a several per cent premium. The Coinage Act of 1853 rectified this situation, but in the meantime the Mint produced less than 100,000 half dollars in this year. Examples are desirable in any grade, though in practice few circulated, and most survivors today are at the EF level or above. This piece exhibits obverse slate and copper patina, while the reverse is less toned with a crescent of reddish-brown color adjacent to the ring wing. WB-2, with diagonal die lines in the shield. A couple stars are softly struck but the perpetual problem area beneath the reverse shield is nicely detailed. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with (Glenn) Peterson pedigree on label.
