$1150 		Challenging San Francisco Issue, Repunched Date, Steely Fields, Gray-Gold Patina, Massachusetts Collection. The 1871 San Francisco date is challenging in any grade and more so in AU due to a mintage of only 320,000 for the western frontier era. PCGS population at grade is a scant three pieces. This example is richly toned with deep golden gray and background blues. Strike is near complete and above average. Surfaces are blemish free with steely fields and the resulting reflective luster. The F-101 variety results from an obverse die that has bold repunching above the flag of the 1 digit and top of 8 digit in the date. Another released from the Massachusetts Collection that is housed in a newer NGC holder with edge view insert. December 1969
