First Gold $1 From New Orleans, Brilliant Frosted Luster, Vibrant Cartwheels, Honey Green-Gold. 1849 brought the production launch of the $1 gold dollar at the New Orleans mint with 215,000 struck. Most entered circulated in the deep south resulting in the majority of survivors being in the circulated grades. Gem survivors are very rare with the MS64 level being the ideal "value" grade as premiums escalate quickly. The Osprey Collection is back with a near-gem example with splendid satiny luster along with vibrant cartwheels. Under angled lighting, the coloration shift to yellow green-gold. The images are accurate as to the in-hand appearance. CAC has approved 11 at the MS64 grade with only five finer. Again, lots of value here for those building a truly advanced set of early U.S. gold. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.5 (2012-2013) holder with CAC approval. December 1969
