Original $850 Small Date, Perfectly Original, Deep Gray-Blue Obverse Toning Spot, Massachusetts Collection. This perfectly original 1837 F-102 Small Date continues to be the die variety plate coin at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. The Massachusetts Collection (Coulombe Family on Open Set Registry) purchased this lovely raw dime back in 2015 for me. During the tenure in his collection, a PCGS grading submission resulted in an AU Details, Environmental Damage opinion. Let's walk through this dime carefully. Surfaces are lightly frosted consistent with the issue. Toning is a natural coin gray-gold that is consistent on both sides. The blue-gray area to the left of Liberty is most likely dried ink dating back a century or more. When I first purchase this piece in the early 1990s, this blue-gray region did not bother me as it provided unique character to the piece. Of course, PCGS will take the safe route and certify as a Details specimen. The question comes down to the coin itself as strictly original with lovely frosted luster. Would you like to own this web-book plate coin? It is way more pleasing that a dipped out white AU straight graded by PCGS that is all too common in the marketplace. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with F-102 No Stars, Sm Date attribution on the label.
