Near-Gem Original, Newtown Collection. Thick, frosted luster covers the untoned fields, with only a bit of smoky patina evident at the date. Bright surfaces suggest an old dipping, precluding CAC consideration, but the coin remains well within the PCGS standard. The strike is excellent, with a full head and sharp sprigs within the wreath. F-101, with die clashing behind the date and circular lathe lines evident within the central figure. Lathe lines are unusual on 19th century coinage and clearly point a finger at the engraver, who normally would have smoothed these out before submitting the die to the coiner. PCGS has approved 15 coins in MS64 with 11 pieces finer. The PCGS price guide value is $1,500. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder. December 1969
