Shattered Obverse, Crusty Gray, Choice Surfaces, Top 100 Varieties Semi-Key Date, AuburnNY Accordian Collection. A rare and desireable variety due to a massive die crack that nearly encircles the obverse. When striking this 1854-O F-102 example, the obverse die (anvil die) has completely cracked resulting in shelf metal characteristics at the bottom of the 18 and through the 54 digits. The shelf metal phenomenon is described extensively at the web-book's F-102 page. Grading this variety can be challenging due to the uneven obverse surfaces that are prone to accelerated wear. Let's now focus on this new AuburnNY Accordian client offering. A medium coin gray patina uniformally covers the obverse and reverse. Surfaces are strictly original, never messed with and choice at the assigned grade level. Reverse strike is surprisingly good given the obverse die degradation. The obverse is weakly struck at the gown line and lower leg, which is typical for the variety. Listed as #38 in the Top 100 Varieties set. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2022) holder with CAC approval.
