Popular Overdate, Low CAC Populations, Steely Reflective Luster, Light Gray, Well Preserved. On March 8th, 1922, President James Monroe recognized several newly independent Latin America states and warned European countries to not interfere. This speech to Congress became known as the Monroe Doctrine. 1822 half dollar production totaled slightly over 1.5 million pieces with so-called O-101 and O-102 overdates. This example is the O-101 die variety with progressively lower date punch digits. A pleasing example with steely fields along with a reverse that could be labeled as partially mirrored. In-hand mottled gray shades transition to lovely peripheral orange-gold on the obverse while the reverse is very reflective with light gray and gold hues. Housed in PCGS Gen 5.0 (2015) holder with CAC approval. December 1969
