 Choice $9500 Choice Original, Newtown Collection. Steely gray surfaces underlay mottled russet patina, with additional shades of gold color evident on the reverse. The fields are perfectly original and hairline-free, while the overall flash is consistent with the assigned grade. F-102, with the date punched to the left, much closer to the tip of the shield than the F-101. The CAC census indicates 33 pieces total, with three coins at MS63 and four examples finer. The PCGS report is not far behind, with five coins noted at MS63 and four pieces higher. The CAC guide value is $9,900. Uncirculated examples of Liberty Seated branch Mint pieces prior to the 1870s are typically challenging, as collectors of the period cared little about mintmarks. Certain branch Mint issues are completely unknown in Mint State, while others, such as the present coin, are numbered in the single digits. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.2 (2004) holder with CAC approval.
