$1800 		Near-Choice Original, Steven Vitale Collection.. 1859 San Francisco strikes amounted to only 60,000 pieces with only three examples securing a PCGS Mint State certification. Acquiring specimens even at the VF and EF grades will prove to be quite challenging as few reach the market in a year's time. This date is well known for its low survival rate when choice as nearly all examples entered circulation during the busy California gold rush era. This Vitale Collection example is toned a moderate coin gray with steely fields and residual reflectance. Though the strike is not complete, a constant issue for the date, this lot features complete stars and well defined leaves in the upper wreath. Surfaces have been lightly wiped in the past but well within the PCGS requirements for certification. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.6 (2013-2014) holder. December 1969
