 Choice $2300 Large Depression Below Shield, Web-Book Plate Coin, Choice Original, AuburnNY Accordian Collection. After first documenting and adding this 1865-S F-101a Seated dime to the web-book during 2014, it now returns to GFRC in a PCGS EF40 holder for a sales appearance. Back in 2014, the followin was listed in the web-book concerning this lot. "At the May 2014 Denver Coin Expo, a second example (as known to me) surfaced in original EF45 grade and is illustrated above. This dime exhibits the same obverse depression below the shield as on the Greer variety plate coin. However, a closer examination of the reverse also revealed a second depression on a maple leaf in the lower left wreath directly below (D)IME. This smaller depression can be seen on the Greer plate coin also. This sub variety is definitely well served by an R7 rarity rating as very rare. Being offered, via the UpstateNY Accordian Collection, is the lot with its natural coin grade surfaces. The originality is unquestionable given the "dirt" surrounding the motifs on both sides. To date, no explanation has been tendered for the large obverse depression, but a filled die with grease could be assumed. In important opportunity for the die variety specialist.
