Central America recovery is the stuff of legend, perhaps best told in Gary Kinder’s book, Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea, an engaging narrative that completely details the challenges of this deep-sea salvage operation. This continues to be an evolving story, with the discoverer Tommy Thompson currently in prison on contempt charges, as he refuses to divulge the whereabouts of certain parts of this fabled treasure. Among the thousands of pieces recovered is this exceptionally flashy 1857-S double eagle, which exhibits only scattered ticks and near-full Mint bloom throughout. Sharply struck with defined star centers and defined curls throughout. CAC has certified 729 pieces total, with 301 coins at MS65 or finer. Housed in special PCGS S.S. Central America holder and "Ship of Gold" packaging with CAC approval. The holder also contains a circular holder with "One Pinch" of tiny gold nuggets from the S.S. Central America.
