Sharp Mirrors, Brilliant Reflectance, Golden Patina, Storied Obverse. The 1870-CC Seated dollar date is unquestionably scarce with a mintage of just 12,462 pieces. This newly consigned piece is clearly proof like throughout both sides, although PCGS has not made such a designation. Lovely champagne-gold toning covers both sides. The overall strike is sharp which lends to a cameo effect when viewing under a bright light. Only light weakness exists at Liberty's head and the surrounding stars. A 10x review revealed some light field hairlines mixed in with faint die polish lines. The obverse die (OC-1) has an interesting numismatic story as it was used to also strike the ultra-rare 1870-S dollars, of which just 9 pieces are verified. The following "historical context" quote taken from Heritage Auctions June 2018 sale where this piece sold for $39,600. "After striking a limited number of silver dollars in Carson City -- making the present example one of the first coins struck at that historic mint -- the die was pulled and sent to San Francisco. The San Francisco Mint lacked an 1870 silver dollar obverse die for ceremonies and mementos planned for laying the cornerstone at the new "Granite Lady," which was nearing completion. The festivities required examples of all denominations. Correspondence between San Francisco Mint Superintendent A.H. LaGrange and Carson City Mint Superintendent Abraham Curry suggests that the two mints cooperated to obtain the needed 1870 obverse. Indeed, die markers on this 1870-CC OC-1 example match those on 1870-S dollars as viewed in Heritage's photographic archives." Housed in PCGS Gen 3.1 (1993-1998) old green holder.
