Market Acceptable $225 7 Stripe Shield, Challenging Die Variety, Grayish-Brown Patina, Reverse Porosity, Dr. Glenn Peterson Collection. An interesting 1855 Liberty Seated half dime die variety with extra 7th horizontal shield line. A potential doubled obverse die as all horizontal shield lines are doubled. This doubling adds an extra horizontal line named as the 7th. Steve Crain considered this variety to be an R7 rarity along with Dr. Peterson. Based on conversations with Clint Cummings, an R5 rarity is more appropriate though those that do come to market are impaired with one issue or another. The Peterson specimen is toned an even grayish-brown with heavy obverse verdigris. The reverse has faint porosity and a few rim marks that are toned over. Pricing this piece is difficult as Peterson had a high estimate.
