Gem $2450 New April 14! Challenging Proof Strike, Misplaced and Repunched Date, Top 100 Varieties, Lakeland Collection. The 1872 F-109 is a difficult but rewarding proof variety to locate. First, the base of the 2 digit is mistakenly punched into the rock directly below the pendant. Secondly, the 7 and 2 digits are repunched. Repunching is visible at the bottom of both digits. The variety was discovered by Kam Ahwash and first listed by Greer. It is further listed as part of the Top 100 Varieties set. An example of this variety, grading PCGS PF65 Cameo, brought $2760 at the Heritage Central States Signature auction during May 2004. Fast forward to 2024 where the Lakeland Collection has released a PF66 example with fully documented variety holder. This piece is a joy to view under a bright light given the undisturbed mirrors and sharp radiance. There is a tiny link mark to the right of Liberty's head otherwise the fields are unabraded or hairlined. This lot belongs in an advanced Top 100 Variety collection. Housed in new large font NGC holder with special Top 100 Varieties label. The label reads 1872/72 MPD TOP-100 F-109.
