Gem $2500 New March 3! Superb Eye Appeal, Brilliant Mirrors, Gem Original, Evergreen State Collection.. All 1861 dated proofs were struck with a Type 2 obverse design. The report mintage of 1,000 pieces is suspect as many went unsold and were melted. This notable survivor is an unquestionable gem with brilliant mirrors that "pop" under a bright light. The obverse reflectance is overlaid with aquamarine-rose centers and a gorgeous yellow-gold ring at the borders. Deep rose covers the reverse center with a transition to aquamarine-blue at the wreath with a hint of gold at the extreme rims. The fields are pristine other than three faint hairlines in the right obverse field. The eye appeal is consistent with the Evergreen State Collection's efforts to locate proof strike with pleasing toning and overall eye appeal. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.5 (2012-2013) holder with no auction records that could be located.
