Choice $8850 Semi-Key Early Date, Choice Original, Cumberland County Collection.. The 1923-S Walking Liberty half dollar is much more difficult to locate in high grade than its mintage of 2.1 million pieces would suggest. Strong commercial demand ensured most of the struck coins circulated wildy. Weak strikes and excessive surface marks are the norm for this issue. As a result, this date has a low CAC approval population stands at 137 pieces with 20 at the MS64 grade level and 16 finer. Few CAC approved MS64 records can be found in auction records validating the scarcity of this date in near-gem Mint State. Surfaces are a creamy white and emit satiny cartwheel luster under a light source. Strike is better than average with complete upper skirt lines and an outlined hand. However there is no definition of the thumb. Overall, an accurately graded semi-key example with pleasing eye appeal. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder with CAC approval. Please note that the color gradient on the GFRC images is not as pronounced on the coin as seen on the images. Previously from the Twin Lakes Collection and listed in the GFRC Sales Archive. PCGS #6586.
