Gem $4850 Small Thin S, Brilliant Frosted Luster, Swirling Cartwheels, Gem Original, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. For several decades, I could not make a decision on whether I liked the F-101 or F-102 PCGS MS64 CAC dimes better, in my reference collection, to the point of releasing one back into the marketplace. The F-101, as offered today, presents lovely frosted surfaces and swirling cartwheels that are accentuated under a bright light. The F-102 specimen is darker with partially mirrored fields and has won the 1873-S spot in the core set. Back to the F-101 then. This die pairing is found in early and late die states with the primary die state diagnostic being die erosion. This lot is a late die state specimen with obvious erosion under the date digits and weak reverse wreath devices. Regardless of the die erosion, the luster is entirely brilliant as one would expect from a gem survivor. This lot was purchased January 2006 and later CAC approved during 2014 and has served at the F-101 plate coin withing The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. Total date CAC approved population presently stands at 25 pieces with 6 at the MS64 level and only 3 finer. The PCGS and CAC guides are understated for this date given the rarity. My cost basis for this lot is $100 less than the offer price while paying $5500 for the remaining F-102 in the core collection. This is an important opportunity for the astute collector. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder with CAC approval.
