$950 		Rare Civil War San Francisco Date, Gray Patina, Steely Fields. An underrated Civil War date struck with Type 1 obverse hub. I have much respect for the 1861 San Francisco issue as scarce in all lower circulated grades and become very scarce in VF or better. In Mint State, this date is very rare. Furthermore, 1861-S is the toughest S mint date in the 1860's to locate and remains undervalued in grades of EF or better. This EF40 certified example is a fresh GFRC buyback and previously from the City By The Bay Collection. Surfaces are toned a natural gray while the fields are steely. The Type 1 obverse design brought delicates design details that were prone to rapid wear. This example retains the clasp, most of the gown line and nicely elevated scroll edges at the certified grade. Worthy of serious consideration. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder. December 1969
