Underrated Date, Steely Frosted Luster, Creamy Gold Surfaces. An underrated Philadelphia date due to silver arbitrage that took place from 1850 through early 1853 time frame and was resolved via the Coinage Act of 1853 which reduced the silver weight. This date is much scarcer than its reported mintage of 160,000 as many were melted. This offering, from a Liberty Seated quarter collection, is original with near-choice surfaces. A nearly transparent creamy gold patina covers both sides. Bright light inspection reveals a pleasing steely reflectance on the obverse and a frosted texture on the reverse. The strike is nearly complete with the right stars lacking center points and chronic weakness at the eagle's left leg feathers. Marks by stars 3 and 4 precluded a full Choice quality rating. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.5 (2012--2013) holder. December 1969
