While silver Closed 3 denominations exhibits a 3 digit with closely positioned loops, the gold dollar date punch presents a fully closed 3 digit with looks like an 8 digit. Mintage is reported at 1,600 with this variety being one of the rarest coins in the entire gold dollar series. The date also comes with heavily basined dies resulting in sharp mirrors, as on this example, that are quite impressive under a bright light. The certified MS60 grade appears to be too strict for this piece as the fields are ever so lightly hairlined with the radiance overwhelming this anomaly. I don't see rub on the cheek with a Mint State designation being warranted. A CAC submission failed to secure a green bean as I had hoped but the coin appears to be a bargain at the offered price based on appearance and rarity. Housed in NGC Gen 7 (2000-2001) holder.
