Small Letters Reverse, Rare Early Issue, Condition Rarity. The 1842 half eagle is known with a Small Letters reverse and a Large Letters reverse. Both types are scarce, particularly in high grades and rare when taking into account CAC stickering requirements. GFRC is thrilled to be offering an AU58 specimen that features frosted mint luster and warm honey-gold coloration. Well-struck devices are virtually unworn, with few abrasions for the grade. A heavy die crack runs through the lower reverse legend and denomination. The PCGS population is 5 while CAC has approved 9 total and two at the offered grade. CAC has stickered two finer; an MS61 and a full gem MS65. With most survivors concentrated at the EF40-AU50 level, this lightly circulated example is a noteworthy condition rarity for the advanced gold collector. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2024) holder with CAC approval. The PCGS label documents the Small Letters die variety. Ex. Maurice Stork Collection December 1969
