Near Gem Original, Gray-Rose-Brown Patina, Lightly Mirrored Fields, Fully Struck, Conservative Grading, Osprey Collection. The Mint Act of February 21, 1853 mandated the weight reduction of silver coins from the half dime through the half dollar but left the dollar untouched. Q. David Bowers in his "Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia" mentions that "the entire situation of the utility of the silver dollar in the channels of American commerce during this time, indeed since the early 1840s, draws different interpretations and conclusions. However, the Liberty Seated silver dollar was not seen in American circulation from spring 1853 until well into the 1870s." Where was the mintage of slightly over 46,000 pieces stored? In banks according to Bowers. This surviving example has been conservatively graded and is housed in new 2015 style PCGS holder. Surfaces are unabraided and covered with transparent gray, rose and brown colors. Fields are mirrored and quite pleasing under a light source. Strike is hammered with the entire Liberty device being deeply impressed. Overall, a superior example at the assigned PCGS grade with CAC submission being warranted. Please give this lovely specimen special consideration.
