No L, Tiny Mintage, Briliant Frosted Luster, Honey Green-Gold, Choice Overall. The "No L" Open Wreath 1849 gold dollar was a new denomination in response to private coiners and a substantial influx of gold California. James Longacre was the designer and added a tiny "L" initial to the obverse at the truncation line of the bust. However, no all obverse working dies were hubbed with the "L" initial. Due to being listed in the Redbook and other price guides, this variety has remained popular and is estimated to the third rarest gold dollar per David Akers. This release, from GFRC's old time collection client, is a near-gem example with brilliant frosted luster and honey green-gold coloration. The strike is meticulously executed with all motifs fully impressed. Vertical die striations are noted on the reverse along with a die scratch from the upper right wreath to through O(F) that is easily seen with a 10x. A fully choice example that was submitted to CAC without approval. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder. December 1969
