Choice $500 Near Gem Original, Thick Frosted Surfaces, Superb Golden Cartwheels, Eroded and Cracked Dies, Former Gerry Fortin Reference Collection.. A stunning 1875 San Francisco Below Wreath offering with thick frosted surfaces on both sides. The San Francisco mint experienced a dramatic production increase from 1874 (240,000 pieces) to 9,070,000 during 1875. The huge production ramp resulted in excessively worked dies with lapping and cracked dies being the rule. Locating a fully struck 1875-S dime with full strike from fresh dies is an ongoing challenge. This example is a near gem and important historical artifact of the perod. Overall strike is weak from shallow relief dies that were most likely lapped. Surfaces are heavily frosted and generate considerable cartwheel luster. A natural light gold patina covers both sides. A heavy reverse die crack is seen in the right wreath. Blemishes are limited to a stray micro line in the right obverse field. This offering is fairly graded with substantial eye appeal. Purchased by Gerry Fortin at the 2004 August ANA and employed as the F-110 web-book plate coin within The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. Housed in NGC Gen 7 (2000) holder. Now being released by the Indiana Collection. and ready for another home in a prominent die variety collection.
