Original $3000 New March 23! New Orleans Issue, Rare Grade, Residual Luster, Saw Mill Run Collection. 1855 New Orleans struck quarters are notorious for workmanship issues. A high ratio of the date is seen with rough surfaces and partial strikes at the head and date. Collectors must exercise patience when attempting to locate a reasonable example of this issue. The Saw Mill Run Collection is releasing a notable example with strong strike and colorful toning. Under a bright light, orange-rose and blues grace the obverse while the reverse offers golden hues at the borders. Steely-frosted luster is readily apparent on the reverse and consistent with my expectations for strict originality. An important opportunity for those attempting to build a date and mintmark set as this date will be elusive in robustly struck EF or better. A check of the CAC census validates how difficult this date is when choice as only 12 have been approved in all grades. I'm certain this example has been to CAC and was not approved. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder.
