Gem $750 New April 28! Vertically Cracked Reverse, Beautifully Toned Surfaces, Bold Radiance, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. One of the more colorfully toned plate coins within the Liberty Seated dime die variety online reference, this 1838 F-103a dime is a superb portrayal of the vertically cracked reverse variety as listed in the Top 100 Varieties. This example is the F-103(a) die state with a partial vertical crack. Spectacular eye appeal is readily evident from the images as deep obverse rose toning is nicely framed by blues at the borders while the reverse is entirely blue other than a small center rose dot. This is a sharp lustrous example with more reverse radiance due to the lighter toning. Following is the die variety description from the web-book, "Reverse B begins to crack and, in this middle die state, exhibits a long vertical die crack starting at O(N)E, down through D(I)ME and through the left ribbon bow loop. The die crack finally exits the rim at about 6:00. On Obverse 2, Stars 1, 8, 9 and 12 are repunched and there are no obvious signs of die degradation. Definitely a conversation piece that has been in Fortin reference collection since October 2001.
